Mothers, the Heart of the Family, the Soul of Society
An ASP Mother's Day Reflection
On this one Sunday in May, we honor not only the incredible woman we call Mom, but every woman whose labor, love, and wisdom sustain the most fundamental of all institutions: that of the family. Our consumer culture has as its ultimate end the acquisition and consumption of stuff, and in light of that regularly prioritizes productivity over people and good ‘ole American independence over shared community interdependence. The American Solidarity Party is backed by a simple truth: family, which has as its core natural marriage, is the foundational unit of society. The heartbeat of most families is mom, who forms the moral and disciplined center of the home.
ASP principle 4 reminds us that this basic unit must be strengthened through unwavering support and never undermined. That external support is mirrored by the internal role of every mother, who through self-sacrifice, unconditional love, and tireless effort is the prime mover of the family.
One of the primary roles of the family is to instill in the next generation empathy, stewardship, shared responsibility, and a deep love for our Creator. And it is certainly mothers, often the first to rise and last to call it a day, that cultivate the soil of the family where these virtues can take root.
It is good for us to be reminded, on every second Sunday in May, that motherhood is not only the private role that moms play in the individual family but rather the cornerstone on which civic society is built. Her influence radiates outward from her home as her children attend school and as her family fills their favorite pew each Sunday. From her children to the classroom, from her home to her church, from their neighborhood to the whole nation. St. Pope John Paul II echoed this sentiment when he said, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.”
So today, in a special way, we are filled with gratitude for not only our individual mothers (Love you, Momma!!!) but also for the vocation of motherhood itself. And we renew our pledge, as a Party and as a community, to work to shape a society that never fails to honor and protect the sacred work that our mothers do.
Happy Mother’s Day!
