A statement on the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence

As President Abraham Lincoln famously noted, with the Declaration of Independence, “our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”  No one can forget or deny those American aspirations.  The United States of America is the land of the free, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Yet our nation often forgets another founding principle – solidarity.  The revolutionaries were not individuals standing alone – “for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”  Stated differently, as Benjamin Franklin remarked, “We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.” 

“There is no freedom without solidarity” was the rallying cry of the Polish Solidarity Movement, our party’s namesake.  If we wish to secure the blessings of liberty for another 250 years, we the people must remain united.  Let us pray together for greater American Solidarity.
